Isaiah brought good news to those who had been dealt many blows in life.

Read Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11.

This passage (which also happened to be the one Jesus read in his hometown synagogue when he announced his own ministry) gives us a glimpse of what Isaiah understood his purpose and mission to be. He would bring good news to those who had been dealt many blows in life. He would sit with the brokenhearted, work to set people free of all that held them captive, and remind people that they were precious to God. He would provide comfort and healing to those who were struggling with grief and weariness.

In what ways are these values being shown in our community of faith? In what ways are they missing? Which of these words inspire you to put your own faith into action? How much of what you share about your faith sounds like good news?

In prayer, ask God to show you how you can participate in the Spirit’s work of bringing good news, healing, and friendship.
