Paul is writing to a church that is fractured. One side follows the teachings of Paul and the other follows someone named Apollos. He insists it is their jealousy and quarreling that is preventing any spiritual growth. This sort of loyalty that leads to division and disunity is silly, according to Paul. He and Apollos might have been a part of sharing the gospel, but it is God who causes the seeds to sprout and grow. And so, he asks, who should the church be following? Jesus, the One who taught, healed, invited, challenged injustice and systems of oppression, included, noticed suffering, and sacrificed out of love for humankind.
